I think you have equal standing with CTV's David Vogel. Mr. Vogel overstates his authority on a Copyright that is not his to authorize.Originally Posted by Mykhailo
So now I have to ask your permission? Explain why people should not be able to see Knox County Commission meetings on the Internet.
I did not troll anywhere. I posted links to videos of public meetings. Nothing more.
i'm with mr. nine on this one. how can you "copyright" footage of a public meeting? (c-span recently acknowledged that it holds no copyright on footage of congress in session.)
and why would a nonprofit community television station want to discourage people from seeing their government in action?

Omigod, gypsy, do NOT get Nine started. He posted about this on KnoxViews, asking for advice on what he should do since Dave Vogel told him not to post Commission video from CTV on YouTube.Originally Posted by gypsy
The advice almost unanimously was "CTV sucks for taking this line, but you shouldn't post stuff they asked you not to without talking to a lawyer."
In true Nine fashion, Mike proceeded to a) argue with everyone who answered his request for advice, b) compare anyone who suggested caution to Dave Vogel and insist they were anti- free spech, and c) finally admit that he wasn't really looking for advice, he was just trolling for folks to beat up on.
This week Mark Harmon announced that he had worked something out with CTV that would allow public meetings to be posted to YouTube by folks who filed a form with CTV and showed them ID. Not perfect, but an improvement.
Mike promptly announced he would not only not file a form, he would continue posting videos until County Commission voted to stop him.
And then he said he wasn't looking for a fight.
So I beg all of you, DO NOT encourage him to bring this discussion over here. Those of us who read KnoxViews have already had about all we can stand.

well i have no sympathy for nine's obsessive-compulsive abrasiveness, but even if he's obnoxious he's right. cspan just went through this in that flap with pelosi, and the policy they settled on ought to be the model. having to get a permission form or something from ctv is ridiculous. i can't possibly conceive of why they would require that or what purpose a permission form serves.
i'll shut up about it in the interest of not fanning flames, but really, what a load of crap.

I completely agree with you about CTV. But Nine's not really interested in all that; he just wants attention, attention, ATTENTION.Originally Posted by gypsy

well it's your county. but i don't understand what ctv thinks it's "protecting." it's a public service channel, covering public meetings. correct me if i'm wrong, but i think they are given a dedicated feed by the county in order to serve the public. they don't have goddamn copyright over public proceedings. and again, i can't for the life of me imagine why they would assert such a thing. what are they trying to protect?
(sorry "copyright infringement" is a big red flag to me these days. i'm not even too sympathetic to claims in areas where the legality is a lot murkier, but in something like this it's just positively offensive.)

Still agreeing with you.Originally Posted by gypsy
Still saying that Nine isn't really interested in any of this; he's interested in making himself out to be a crusading hero.
Sorry if that sounds harsh to those of you who aren't familiar with Nine's, um, writings. I suggest you check out this thread http://www.knoxviews.com/node/4123.
