    Default The Tom Waits Reader

I've been laughing out loud a lot on the subway reading the Tom Waits Reader. So far my favorite interview is from Elizabeth Gilbert GQ June 2002. It's like she read all of the other interviews edited them and rewrote with better details Maybe she did it's one of the later interviews either way in my opinion she has the goods.

Elizabeth Gilbert was the visiting instuctor at UTK just last semester. She taught a class called Fiction in Place. She got Tom Wait's autograph for one of my grad school buddies who assisted her. She is in Fiction and I am Critical Theory so our paths did not much cross. But all accounts that I have heard say she is a swell gal.

If you don't mind me asking, what does she look like?

She is a pretty. She has blonde hair and a medium/slender build. Maybe 30 something in age.

I bought a cheapo Tom Waits bio years ago and it read like the back of a cereal box. It was like someone said, "Here's a list of facts about Tom Waits. Can you put the facts into sentence form? We'll give you three days."

I'd like to read Gilbert's interview. I've read a couple of good ones in the past month.

I found this great list of quotes and anecdotes about Tom Waits in a Google search. Oddly enough, the page is gone, but Google still has it in the cache. Catch it while you can: http://tinyurl.com/yh3ors

Elizabeth Gilbert is one of the most amazing people I've ever interviewed. (for Metro Pulse, when she was a visiting prof. I think I related her story about interviewing Tom Waits and him talking about the kid who beat him up in school.) She wrote "The Last American Man," and her most recent, "Eat Pray Love," is a memoir that is so funny and sad and witty. I laughed and cried through the whole thing and immediately wanted to buy it for everyone I know. Her writing makes you feel like you're pals, wish you were pals. For the interview, I had lunch with her and saw her again at the Tomato Head. I still miss her and wish she would be my mentor.

I'm always amazed that anything I'm interested in has a Knoxville connection. I'll definatly check out her other work, thanks.
