I had a FB friend after the speech post that we should impeach Obama and install Rubio as president (he didn't say how). So I just asked - politely - exactly what actions he would impeach Obama for since the Constitution had a pretty high standard.
This caused him to go on a rant which listed each of Obama's "crimes" (taking too many vacations was one - sure didn't sound like an impeachable offense to me) that ended with him accusing Obama of "not being a man of my God" (by which I presume he meant Muslim) and that people who support him are anti-American. He also "hoped" I would be ok in the coming civil war.
I've known this guy since college. He's never been a crazy radical, just a non-so-bright insurance salesman.
Anway, I snapped. I told him I was tired of just turning away when people impugned my character and my patriotism because my politics were different from theirs. And that I wasn't a "woman of his god" and what the heck did he want to say about THAT? And that I would trust the U.S. military to protect me from the treasonous in the event of that civil war.
Amazing. What I got back was a "oh, we should all just agree to disagree, that's what make America great, yadda, yadda, yadda."
Apparently calling him on the crazy - at least the personal attack part of it - was enough to get him to back off.
I may do that more often.

But how can you "agree to disagree" about a fact? Obama is a Christian. Was raised a Christian. Still attends a Christian church. He is not Muslim. There is nothing to agree or disagree about. It is a fact.

hell, i just delete those types out of my feed. you'd be amazed how the stress dissipates once you no longer feel obliged to engage navel-pickers just because they once went to the same school as you.
unless you're still actually getting your kicks from righteous ire, in which case engage away.
"agree to disagree." This statement was banned in the philosophy department at my alma mater. It means "I think you are wrong and I am not going to support my assertion because I am afraid my mind might be changed."

I call 'em on their bull and they back down. But I don't delete or ignore. We have to engage. If no one is talking to them then we are just going to continue with a giant divide. Someone has to be willing to reach across and start a dialogue. I require people on my FB wall to be polite and use civil language. And to be able to back-up their nonsense.
