Looks like the vulnerability is just through browsers, so you just need to keep your browser from running Java without permission. This is a damned good idea even without an announced security hole.

You can go to http://www.java.com/en/download/inst...jsp?detect=jre to detect your version of Java.
I did that using Firefox and a FF message popped up telling me that Java was disabled for my safety and the Java detector has been spinning for a long time.

I'm not sure you even need java in the browser anymore, what with html 5 and javascript (NOT java at all). You do need it in the operating system the same way you need Microsoft Silverlight (eg. for Netflix) and the .Net framework because a lot of non-browser based programs are written in Java.

Anybody else have the notion that "hackers" mostly describes corporate espionage (software companies fighting), or something akin to the oil change guy filing a groove in your v-belt so he can sell you one for $86? Yeah, I know data theft is big business, but these other scenarios cut a lot of cheese too.
