I guess I'm official now. My car was broken into for a backpack of dog toys and water bottles.

This is one of the main reasons that I have not moved back to knoxville. Monica and I are having a baby and I just don't want to raise it with this sort of violence. I've been asking this same question for years why is the crime rate so high in Knoxville.

The lack of education seems to be the most likely answer, also the general apathy of the populace. There seems to also be some sort of cultural attachment to violence in k-town.

My opinion? For the same reason I believe drug addiction is probably higher here. That backpack promised something worth pawning, or who knows? Maybe worth cooking and shooting up. The addict who spotted it, spotted opportunity. Gun shootings, same thing. The gun usually isn't supposed to go off. I have a front row seat to this rapidly growing problem (my job) and it is a real horror show. Even weed isn't just weed anymore. B/c it is illegal, you don't know what you're getting, and it often gets cut with all kinds of crazy enhancers like crack, PCP, etc. to produce highs so intense that it takes a fast load of opiate to bring you back down. To get more, you have to steal. To get a lot, you have to rob. To make people give you stuff, you need a gun.

Surprisingly Orlando, Memphis, Jackson MS and Buffalo have similar crime rates as Knoxville. Knoxville has a higher property crime rate than Detroit, Memphis and Baltimore. Sickening. All the major TN cities have dramatically high crime rates compared to the National average.

That is a logical progression, but for such a small city why so much here? Why on earth does Knoxville have crime rates equal to or closer to cities like Detroit, Chicago, Baltimore and DC (where drug trade is a much larger market) compared to the national average? Hell, they cleaned up NYC why can't we do it here? How in the hell do we have people stealing lawnmowers while you are in the midst of mowing (true story, a friend just went in to pee....poof mower gone).

    (a) We're not praying hard enough?
    (b) Ask the Muslin in the white (sic) House
    (c) Vol fans gotta blow off of steam somehow
    (d) No citizen overview of KPD means no actual follow up with crime reports/activity. Investigations are only conducted if they make headlines like so-called nuisance raids on head shops for selling synthetic marijuana.

I feel your pain. My neighborhood has seen two or three significant waves of criminal activity and pretty much nothing has happened from KPD or the City.

    Property crime sucks in Knoxville....

If you leave anything outside for a second in North Knoxville, it will get taken. I hated that about NoKno. Park your bike? Somebody in a truck with Grainger County tags circles back around to snag it if you leave it unattended. Leave a weedeater on the porch while you go grab a beer? Gone. And very often the excuse when the guy gets let loose on an appearance warrant after booking is "It was outside I figured they didn't want it."

Anecdotally, at least, I noticed this right away. When I moved to Baltimore in 1995, it was near the peak of its Bodymore, Murdaland days, with more than 300 homicides a year on a population of around 650,000. And yet, it struck me, I knew far more victims of property crime and random street stuff in Knoxville than I did here. That remains the case.
