Just checked on NPS and they are saying the synchronous activity is already waning and should be completely finished by next weekend. Worst part is, they started requiring NON-REFUNDABLE parking reservations this year. What a waste.

The reservations are what, $1.50 per car? It is unfortunate that the timing was off, but the reservation system is better than what they were doing previously. Last year we packed everybody into a car and drove up there several hours before sundown, only to find out that we were hours too late to be able to secure a spot on the trolley to the fireflies. I'd rather risk the buck-fifty than spend a day waiting in the Sugarlands Visitors Center parking lot to see the bugs, or spend hours driving up and back just to find out that the trolley rides are already booked up.
The fireflies in my backyard were the best I've ever seen - absolutely stunning and darn near synchronous.
Fear is the thief of dreams.
yep, pretty good firefly show right here every night for the last coupla weeks. agree darn near synchronous.
and yep, elkmont crowd scene has gotten crazier. But actually its kinda cool seeing so many people making the effort to come together and wander around in the dark just to appreciate bugs. And the way the long-closed road and abandoned cabins come back to a kind of life at night is like a scene out of Big Fish.
months ago we made elkmont campground reservations for this week; probably will go ahead and go

I'm kind of all up in the downtown and had a nice firefly show last night.
They seemed lost.
I hope they made it home okay.

When you do things right. people won't be sure that you've done anything at all.
We went on Saturday (1st night of reserved passes) and while it was cool, they were definitely almost done. A little disappointment and folks wandering around in the dark searching for a better perspective. I'm sure we'll try again next year. The reservation system is much better than fighting crowds previous years. With that said, the firefly show in my backyard the past 2 weeks was much better.

last night and wednesday night were not "spectacular" but there were still areas of impressive effect. Might be that while a portion of fireflies peaked early, there is still a portion on the regular schedule enough for the next few nights. It was worthwhile camping but i'm not sure it would be worth the trolley hassle.
also there are small pockets of white rhododendron blooming

This will kill downtown Townsend.
