seems we are in for some wintery weather. forecast calling for continued rain possibly turning to snow as the temperature drops below freezing overnight. sounds like the kind of evening made for curling up by the fire with some hot soup and cider to warm the bones.

    Winter is a commin'

    commin' in a tizzy
    commin' in a whizzy
    whizzin' in the snow
    whizzin' wind bitin'
    Bitin' in frost air
    Bitin' and shiverin'
    shiverin' in celebration
    shiverin' in Winter
    Winter is a commin'

It doesn't look to get near freezing until the early morning hours.

There is too much water in the air and on the ground to freeze quickly. It takes a lot of energy (or lack thereof for freezing) to change the temperature of all that water.

still looks to be messy, cold and slushy. we are going out tomorrow night, thus i hope it isn't soooo wet, though it seems it will still be rather cold.

Because we're often right on the edge of wintry things here, where it could sort of go either way, a useful source of information is the "forecast discussion" page at the national weather service. There the local staff meteorologist posts comments about the way various models are trending and offers his thoughts about developing conditions and what changes he (or she) might be making to the official forecast before the changes are actually made. Sometimes the "current version" of the discussion is just a brief aviation weather summary, but clicking through to previous versions will often yield useful information.

Never seen that before - that's pretty cool. Although I wish NOAA could get their funding bumped enough to afford lowercase letters.
