EDIT: If anybody else wants to feel really old, my wife's is a cover featuring Ollie North defending himself during Iran-Contra.

Apparently the folks at Time weren't thoroughly convinced that this newfangled photography thing was more than just a fad. They were still using good old-fashioned painted portraits for their covers, as the periodical gods had intended.

The next week's cover featured Jimmy Hoffa. One month later, Sputnik was launched.

Wow. They used to put Canadians on the cover?

EDIT: And I'm sorry, but who is "novelist Cozzens"?

EDIT EDIT: OK, someone named James Gould Cozzens. Had a best-seller that year, apparently. I don't think I've ever heard of him.
