I interpreted the "compositionally" as harmonically and structurally. Thus, he sort of lets the air of out of his tires in the sense ALL "Pop" (and I park her SOLIDLY in that category. Not the "old farts and jackasses" that will probably sink Blake Shelton's career.) must follow certain norms. AABA form/predictable time sig/not terribly wacky harmonic structure.

I think the rest of THAT paragraph is pretty solid.

And yes Dung, I concur with your sentiments. I also have a general distrust of the "critical community" in general as they tend to function as a "jury" but, rarely are they "peers". (Get in the van man!)

I park her with the Osmonds and the Monkees. (and I've yet to hear anything as honest or kick ass as "Pleasant Valley Sunday".)

well, the problem with that graph, and the whole piece, as i see it, is that moody's not engaging with taylor swift or pop music—he's got ideas that aren't going to be changed no matter how much he listens, which obviously isn't going to be much. his complaints aren't specific to her or her music at all. and he doesn't make much of a case for his objections other than the old shibboleths of honesty and passion etc. it's just an empty middle-aged bellyache that assumes rock is better than pop.
at least he's not writing about metal this week

One doesn't have to be middle aged. ie: "Here we are now, entertain us!"

    Regarding rock vs pop:

Rock WAS Pop. Everything was Pop (except bebop) or, wanted to be. Look at those old shots of Robert Johnson. He's wearing the slickest suit he could get his hands on. During the big band era housewives knew the names of the sidement. The Blues wanted to be pop. Basically it got there with Chuck Berry and Elvis. Yadda yadda.

right, it's all pop. but pop is also a subset of pop, just like rock is.

Not even close. The Monkees had the Wrecking Crew.

Where odd audio errata, ephemeralities, and nonsense occasionally collide with actual music for serious contemplation. Trouble is - I'm not saying what is which.

Well, she's got Michael Rhodes and Brent Mason to name two. There's NO shortage of firepower in the Guitar Town.

Fwiw, Maura Johnston's response to Rick Moody is pretty funny (starting with the title):

But this is all part of a nastier trend in writing about music, one that resembles a dying yawp of a certain type of white dude who still believes in Real Rock And Roll and who is genuinely unnerved by the idea of women fashioning pop culture in their own image.
