    Default Sweet NOVEMBER movie thread

Recently I was flipping around cable and happened across John Huston's 1956 film of Moby Dick, which I'd never seen before, and I wound up watching the whole thing. Gregory Peck is outright terrible as Ahab, and Huston let him be, though it was shot well enough to keep me diverted. The only really notable scene is where Orson Welles, bigger than a whale himself and playing a minister, emerges out of nowhere to deliver a sermon as only he can in this amazing ship's prow pulpit. This image is the only one I could find, and it doesn't do the set/scene/Welles justice.

You can also watch a crappy rip of the scene here. I love the pan over all the memorial plaques on the wall.

I also watched the first-ever DVD issue of Hardware, the cusp-of-the-'90s horror/sci-fi cult fave. I hadn't seen it since back in the day and remembered it being pretty good and kinda fun, and it turns out it wasn't much of either. Pretty interesting design/look, though; it's dated, but not in a way that makes it seem out-of-date, if you follow me. Maybe that's because '80s sci-fi/horror seems to be making some kind of subcultural comeback right now. Know who probably won't make a comeback? Dylan McDermott, cause he sucks. The movie did get this tune good and stuck in my head for a few days, though.

And I've watched a pile of other stuff that I can't talk about publicly yet. You?

Eagle Eye. I really liked the chase/crash scenes.

Taken. Liked it alot. Liam did a great job of making me think he was someone not to be screwed with.

I'm not sure if I stayed around long enough to determine what film it was, but I remember the rad pulpit.

Where odd audio errata, ephemeralities, and nonsense occasionally collide with actual music for serious contemplation. Trouble is - I'm not saying what is which.

I saw that many moons ago when it first got printed on video. I don't remember much about it other than thinking it was (a) pretentious without redemption and (b) yet another example of spoiling any possibility of worthiness by casting Tom Cruise. The only thing that could have made it worse would have been Winona Ryder* in Nicole Kidman's role.

(*One day, I will write that screed against Coppola for casting her and Keanu Reeves in Dracula.)

aw i think that movie gets a bad rap. (had a loooooong argument about this with snm at the brewpub one night. many beers were involved.) the key to it is the scene in the bedroom, which i think is well played by cruise and kidman. i'm not at all sure that what happens afterward "really" happens. but in any case it's all about honesty and secrets and forgiveness and the ways people negotiate those things in a relationship. i don't think it's a great movie, but i think it's interesting and well made in a hothouse way. and dismissed too often and too easily. (tho ymmv and all that.)

jonathan rosenbaum probably goes too far the other direction, but i think he made a good case for it.

I just remember lots of staged cunnilingus in Mardi Gras masks.
