Anyone ever replaced a torsion spring on a garage door? Wide door, 2 springs on bar above in middle.

I have an old house with torsion springs on each side of the garage door. One of the springs broke a few years back and I replaced it (hardest part was finding the replacement spring). If you do it yourself - BE CAREFUL - those springs are heavy and can really hurt you if you don't pay attention to what you are doing. I almost lost parts of my face when it shot back past me during the first failed installation attempt. I was much more careful and successful the 2nd time. 20 pounds of spring could do some serious damage.
Kinetic energy is a bitch.
If you cannot contain your matter - antimatter field, extend the shields and dump the core.
I used Williams Door Company to do a repair for me not too long ago. Not the springs, but something else. I would recommend them to do the spring repair. Number is 539-0222.
Had one go out on a small one-car garage, but it cost $375 to have a professional come out and replace the pair of springs and pulleys/cables. I thought it was outrageous since I'd found several springs so cheap at the hardware store. In the end, I'm cool with how much we spent. It's like having a new garage door, perfectly balanced with no safety concerns for my own eyes/face or the the livelihood of the little ones that love to play out there underneath the thing. I never realized how heavy garage doors are until my spring went out and nearly killed someone.
Time heals the wound, but then there's still a scar -- to remind us of the way it's meant to be.
I got our garage door spring system repaired last year, but I can't recall who did it. It only cost $120 or so.
I either called someone that a friend suggested, or I called the first garage-door company in the phone book. Can't remember which now.
Williams is the big company in town. They charged me about that same amount as well. I think the chain was screwed up somehow and they replaced it.
After extensive evaluation, I opted to pay to have someone to repair the springs. Didn't want to lose and eye (or limb). Called everyone in phone book and a nice guy from Morgan County beat out everyone locally. For future reference I highly recommend All American Garage Doors (licensed-bonded-insured) at 617-8930. Replaced springs and serviced entire door for $50-$60 less than the larger companies around town.
Thanks for the input, otherwise I may have tried it myself.
