    Default Soccer (football) Nirvana

The Euro 2008 tourney begins this weekend! I usually pull for England (Rooney kicks arse) but it wasn't their year so I'm leaning toward Italy. The France-Italy grudge match next week is gonna be awesome-cant wait for more "headbutting" to occur.

Germany steamrolled Poland again today (bad joke I know). They will probably make it to the quarter finals and then choke. They have played like shite in the past two tournaments.

Croatia-Austria match-ugly! Lots of yellow cards and a shit ton of shots on goal. Nice job Croatia.

Croatia is my bet this year, though if Italy pulls through, they can win.

    "Holy spicy meatball Batman!"

The Dutch are thumping Italy with a wooden shoe right now-although one of the goals was a bad call. Nistelrooy was off side by about 4 miles. The wifey works for a Dutch company and is pulling for the Oranje...slapping her sandals together and chanting with the crowd. This isn't the same Italian team I watch dominate the Cup last year...wheres my grappa!?!

The France-Romania match was a borefest-kudos to Romania for holding them to a draw though. I'm stoked about the France-Italy match next Tuesday. The Italians will need to cowboy up and score some points i.e. kick some frog ass to make up for todays fiasco-its a must win.

Here's a nice review of one of my favorite footie books(I too really like Ajax).

    http://www.ajax-usa.com/desk/you-hav...this-book.html

The last time I looked for a copy of this book, it was hard to find on this side of the Atlantic(It's readily available in England), but you could try here: http://www.deepdiscount.com/viewprod...ku=PEUSA567258

The latest dispatch... (I'm recovering from knee surgery, high as a kite on pain meds with nothing better to do than watch soccer and blab about it...whoopee!)

Russia and Spain are playing in a downpour in Innsbruck today. So far Spain is manhandling Putin's heroes. Villa toes it in via an empty net for an easy goal. Spain is playing offense 24/7...Russia has done nothing but fiddlefart around midfield. More to come...

...gorgeous breakout by Spain! Villa scores again to close out the first half. Russia's in trouble.

Wow. Villa, playing like a man on fire scores again (3). Stick a fork in Russia.

Final, 4-1 Spain. Russia played like poo. Spain is looking unbeatable at the moment.

Set your recorders: Czech Republic v. Portugal! An important Group A match which should be enjoyable.

If the sport's goal is positive attacking football then it was good(if you like to see negative play backfire) to see Greece lose 0-2.

A good explanation why Ruud was not offside: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/mai.../sfnref111.xml

"The player was not offside because in addition to the Italian goalkeeper [Buffon] there was another defender [Panucci] in front of the goalscorer. Even though that player had fallen off the pitch, his position was still relevant for the purposes of the offside law. [He] is still considered part of the game. If we did not have this interpretation then what could happen is the defending team could step off the pitch to play offside and that is clearly unacceptable.

"We have to have the laws as simple as possible for the referee to interpret and for tactical use... if you introduce other interpretations. As a defender you're in play unless you have permission to be off the field."

lmao! I'm one of the few Everton fans who don't hate Rooney with a passion for leaving us for f$%^&* Manchester United.
