View Full Version : Heroes vs. Lost

I know there's some banter going on in each individual thread, but I thought I'd make a thread specifically to discuss BOTH shows, compare them, ridicule the other, etc.

***

Some links first:

http://www.thejay.com/2006/12/11/heroes-lost-rumble/

http://auto.nomo.us/weblog/2007/02/heroes_vs_lost_.html

etc. there's tons of links comparing these two shows

***

Next, there IS PROOF OF A CROSS-OVER, kinda.
Parkman on Heroes is the same actor who played the pilot of Oceanic XXX in Lost! http://herost.com/index.php/2007/05/04/digg-exclusive-video-proof-of-heroes-lost-cross-over/
Gannon car rentals' brochure in both shows:
http://www.4815162342.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=698377
(also at that link, Desmond's physicist friend saying time travel is ridiculous also appears in Heroes, telling Suresh that his theory was ridiculous.)

***

Finally, I will have to admit that LOST seems written for the intellectual who enjoys puzzles and riddles (ME!) whereas HEROES seems written for the comic book geek (ME!). I love both shows. Episode per episode, however, Heroes is far more fulfilling. Some of those LOST eps just seemed like a soap opera stuck in flashbacks.

Heroes is easy to get into and easy to enjoy.

Lost is difficult to get into and nigh impossible to fully understand.

Heroes is fun for the heart, Lost is fun for the brain.

***

There. Now Quack and Fluffy can come here and be assholes and make fun of Heroes all they want (though I bet they continue to do so in the other two threads as well).

...

there was one link i found earlier in the week that i'd like to submit here, but i can't find it now. it had an alternate comparison of character stereotypes than those given in the links above.

i think thats a good way of putting it actually. Heroes is fun and light, Lost is dark and confounding. i do watch both shows actually, but i have to admit if find Lost a lot more engaging. not giving everything away and keeping everyone guessing to me is part of the fun. its maddening sure, and not for everyone. Heroes to me is predictable, and thats not necessarily a bad thing. its just the difference between watching a movie by Raimi vs one by Aronofsky.

oh, we will. besides the fun of making fun of Heroes is watching you and jack get your Wolverine underoos in a wad when we make a crack about it. like i said i watch both and enjoy them too, just for different reasons. i just crack up over jack's "OMGWTF HEROES 4EVA!!!!!" posts.

I'm with you, Pan - I love both shows. Right now, however, I find "Heroes" more engaging and fulfilling, but not because I think "Lost" is starting to become a soap opera. To me, the very things that made "Lost" so intriguing and compelling to begin with are starting to become its downfall - mysteries and questions and riddles and enigmas. I think the writers are in danger of letting the storylines get too convoluted with too many questions. The "answer one question, raise three more" method of storytelling was involving the first two seasons ... now, I'm afraid they've asked so many questions that even long-time viewers have trouble keeping up with what's been asked and answered. Too many elements have been left hanging, and I know the writers have promised to address them down the road (i.e., the four-toed statue, and the Michael/Walt situation), but the time between questions asked and questions answered is getting tedious.

Does that mean I'll quit watching? Hell, no. It certainly is brain-food, or as close as TV can get to that, but it's starting to become a difficult meal to fully digest, no matter how tasty it is.

I watch Lost. I watched the first few eps of Heroes and I enjoyed them, but I don't really want to be obsessed with more than one show at a time. I'm going to buy the first season of Heroes when it comes out on DVD and watch it while I wait for Lost to return for the next season.

huh? can you not read or something? i believe i said comparing Heroes to Lost is like comparing films by Raimi to Aronofsky. fine then, Pixie Stix to Creme Brulee, Ramones to Wire, Rowling to Tolken, whatever.

all im saying is that TO ME, its "fun, simple guilty pleasure" vs "more complex storytelling". i love em both, just one is requires more commitment.

I don't see any point in specifically comparing the two shows (what we really should be doing is all agreeing that 24 sucks), the only thing that bugs me is the fluffy/Mark position that "people watch LOST because they're smarter". That's just crazy talk.

I liked LOST a lot more when it was called The Prisoner. :)

I would like to clear one thing up. In theory, I should like LOST. I think that The Prisoner was probably the best television show ever produced. I like mysteries and puzzles.

The thing is, I don't like LOST as a viewing experience. I have a very low tolerance for television and the 10-odd times I tried to watch LOST I just kept thinking "This is so boring". And you can't compare LOST to something like Umberto Eco - or even, fairly, The Prisoner - because it is crystal clear that even the writers of LOST are not entirely sure what the damn is going on and they're just making things up as they go. The same can not be said of this season of Heroes - everything has come together perfectly, even things that seemed completely inexplicable. And I don't think they've been retconning.

Have you ever considered that the reason they became models and actresses is that they are naturally skinny and attractive?

I don't know, I'm just saying, I've known so many people, male and female, that eat whatever they want and stay skinny that I'm sick of people who make an assumption that a girl can't be skinny unless she's starving herself.

It's actually pretty degrading to constantly make fun of skinny women like that. There's not really any difference between saying "Look at that fatty!" and "Eat a sandwich!", ethically. It's been shown that generally people can't help how they look - anorexia aside, if you're not genetically disposed to be skinny, you simply won't ever be. Just like there's no way I will ever be fat, no matter how much I eat.

no im sure you are right. models by and large dont take weight loss drugs, starve themselves or make themselves throw up. i mean, that simply cant be true.

It's actually pretty degrading to constantly make fun of skinny women like that.

yeah skinny attractive people have it really rough in society today. i feel so sorry for them, what with their ample selections of clothing lines, majority viewership in tv and film, and lets not forget those poor poor models that every guy would probably turn over their lifesavings to just to scrog once. man, it must be tough.

This is similar to the flawed reasoning that people who are "famous" obviously must be happy.

Cary Grant, who was the most famous and adored film star of his generation, was completely miserable until he was 60 or so and discovered LSD.

Hey, I'm skinny and plenty of girls have said I'm attractive. Doesn't really make my life any easier, chief. It's all a matter of perspective.

And "those poor models that every guy would turn over their lifesavings to scrog once"? Do you think that they are so emotionally or intellectually bankrupt that they get much satisfaction out of the knowledge that men are interested exclusively in their bodies, to the point of not even acknowledging they have a personality? Yeah, I think that actually is pretty tough for some of them.

when the magazines, fashion designers, TV producers, movie execs and just about every other aspect of our society today treat fat people the same as thin, ill agree there is no difference. until that day, i call big time bullshit on that statement.

I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about being a good person. A good person does not degrade other people for no reason. The merit of an act is inherent in the intent of the one acting. Yelling "eat a sandwich" at Fiona Apple is as intentionally mean-spirited as yelling "hey fatty" at someone.

yeah, im sure the Academy for Eating Disorders, which issued guidelines back in january aimed at the fashion industry to adopt a medical-certification requirement to affirm that aspiring models do not suffer from an eating disorder and/or related medical complications, were just giving into the urban legends too.

I know the world is cruel to kindness (so did Jesus; as someone summed up the basis of Jesus' teachings once: "If you don't love, you're dead, and if you do, they'll kill you.")

That does not diminish my internal desire to be kind or my moral imperative to be so.

actually, yeah you did, or at least tried to claim that they skinny people and fat people are both scorned on the same level. and thats major bullshit-

"There's not really any difference between saying "Look at that fatty!" and "Eat a sandwich!", ethically."

ive heard a lot more fat jokes than ive ever heard skinny jokes.

Just because I said that it's equally mean to make fun of someone for being skinny as it is to make fun of them for being fat doesn't mean I was saying it happens just as often. I was simply saying that it is just as wrong.

Yet, just a few minutes later you wrote such kind words as...

Not that I disagree concerning da Mandible (who btw could use a steak sammich as well). ;)

Correct. We were talking about not being mean to PEOPLE, though, not harpies of indeterminate gender.

There was a time in my life when I had vastly more money than I could possibly know what to do with. No, I wasn't any happier because of it. The amount of money I do or don't have usually has little bearing on my emotional state.

i guess the blab could only hope you would have invested instead of going into an emotional state.

I wish I had invested it, too. However, I wasn't unhappy when I had that money; it's simply that I was happy for reasons totally unrelated to the money.

quick summary of all the comments i would have posted on this thread if i was a regular:

1. being fat and thin is a completely different issue for girls than it is for guys, and i'm surprised this argument went on so long without someone pointing that out.

2. i don't watch heroes, but LOST is definitely the best show ever. ever. i don't care. ever. shut up. i said EVER.

3. if matthew fox were singing the barney theme show over and over repeatedly forever, i would still think he was the hottest thing on tv. although i'd have a hard time positioning the duct tape over his mouth just right so as to keep the words from coming out but still show his purdy face.

4. in certain situations, being mean is the kindest way to treat a person. sometimes it's the right thing to do. oooh, ponder that.

and those are my comments.

Better than The Prisoner, Monty Python, Twin Peaks, Nobuta Wo Produce, Great Teacher Onizuka...?

That's just crazy talk. I love Heroes but even it doesn't really hold a candle to those shows.

Perhaps you should try figuring out what you're talking about before posting.

Nobuta Wo Produce is Japanese, but it's not an anime. It's a drama. It won the Japanese television awards for Best Drama, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Script and Best Director. Its ratings varied from between 16-18% of the entire Japanese viewing population during its run. It is a touching and compelling story about finding one's identity and the nature of human relations, as well as exploring issues such as redemption and betrayal.

Great Teacher Onizuka was a manga and an anime, but it was made into a live-action drama as well, which is the only version I've seen.

Both of them are far more compelling than anything I've seen on American television in decades.

But, hey, feel free to mouth off without even bothering to check Wikipedia. You're good at it.

Based on the reggaeton Jesse showed us, I'm quite glad I don't know what it is.
