I only knew the movie, which I think is great, and was looking forward to seeing the dramatic production. It was absolutely wonderful.

I went in skeptical. I've always had attitude about live theater. I hung out with actors in my youth and grew really averse to how hammy and stagey and head-up-assy they could get. (Goddamn, don't ever get drunk with an actor holding a book of poetry, whatever you do. You'll end up praying for death or the miraculous appearance of a hit of windowpane to carry you through the ordeal. But I digress.)

Hedwig rocked. Go see it. It's really good. That Beuerlein boy is a Wunderboy.

(you're hanging out with the wrong actors. my friend gets drunk and does the christopher walken for skittles candies routine.)

Eh, it was a long time ago. Those Black Box people look like fun.

Fair warning: don't ever get me started on doing Christopher Walken impersonations. I'll end up talking like him all night.

I attended Hedwig last night too, and have to agree that it was very well done. How have I failed to see Jodie Manross before this?

I saw Hedwig last night and it was a great experience. The Co-op seems to have done a great job developing one of the most diverse viewing audiences ever assembled in Knoxville for live theatre. As the show was beginning, I was looking around the audience to see who the people were that would be uncomfortable or offended. There were quite a few senior citizens in the audience, some extremely old. There we quite a few people who seemed to be fairly conservative judging from their attire. And then there were the Hedwig fans who knew what they were in for. Hedwig made her entrance and the audience was going nuts, I think that the most enthusiastic applause and whooping were coming from those that knew what to expect. Gradually the show moved along with great songs from Hedwig and Yitzhak. The chemistry between Yitzhak and Hedwig and Hedwig and her audience was great. The band was very tight and really relaxed the audience enough so that they could start absorbing the difficult themes of the show. The voices of Hedwig and Yitzhak compliment each other very well. Hedwig owned the theatre and knew that she controlled her audience. From singing to and rubbing the head of a very elderly smiling gentleman to planting a kiss on another man, Hedwig moved through her house winning over each person one by one. About three quarters through the show, an gray haired lady at a table up front had her hands up grooving to the music, everyone was intrigued by this blonde who was singing, cracking jokes about Knoxville and telling the story of her life. The show climaxes and ends with everyone in the audience on there feet giving a standing ovation like I haven’t seen in a very long time. The Co-op and the cast of Hedwig succeeded in bringing a very difficult story with themes of struggle, gender issues, love and human acceptance to life and presenting it to a very diverse audience. Go see this show, you will love it.

Eleanor and I celebrated an anniversary this week by venturing out to the Black Box Theatre to see Hedwig on Friday night. It was a fantastic night and well worth the price of admission.

We had previously seen the movie a couple of times and were happily anticipating how the story translates as a play. It is a commendable production and the lead actor is Hedwig. If John Cameron Mitchell couldn't be available for the role, I can't imagine that the Actors Co-Op could have done better than Joe Beuerlein.

The acoustics of the theatre itself didn't always help listeners understand the rock lyrics, but if folks couldn't hear the words they were still following the story quite well. I'm looking forward to this season of the Actors Co-Op more than any of their seasons in recent memory. It looks like a good year for local theatre.

I went with my sweetie Friday night, too. When I got in her car for our second date and she put in the Hedwig soundtrack, I thought to myself, This Could Work.

The show at the Black Box was a blast, loved the Knoxville references and how Hedwig rolled with some improv when an audience member started talking to her.

I think Hedwig is about the best example of theatre and rock and roll there is.
Watch the extras on the DVD for a deeper appreciation of how it came to be.

For total Hedwig immersion, get the soundtrack, the original broadway cast recording and the wonderful tribute, Wig In A Box. The tribute has Fred Schneider of the B52s fronting Sleater Kinney for Angry Inch.

I could watch endless productions of Hedwig.

I also saw Hedwig and had a fabulous time. Rock 'n' roll in the Black Box rules! (This "Go see it!" theater thread tickles me to death. Let's have more of them in the future.)

I've heard tell that a group is cooking up a production of "Rocky Horror" for October starring Joe as Frankenfurter. Here's hoping!

There's a rumor that there might be an encore at the Grotto. It would be a shame if it didn't happen....

Stay tuned.

I could have sworn I posted a reply about that but now I can't seem to locate it. Strange...

It has been discussed about hosting a semi-regular night alternating between Hedwig and RHPS. I'm sure we'll have an announcement soon enough. :)
