What's the Francis Marion Hotel like? Spiney? Anyone? I'll be in town in a couple of weeks and I'm looking for a hotel. It looks good online, but if its old and musty instead of old and cool, I might choose differently.

Old and cool, though at this time of year everywhere's a little musty.

In Charleston, or just in general? :)

If anyone is in Charleston, SC...you should check out the Dolphin Cove Marina. It's my Uncle's Marina and they've got space to store boats, buy boats, and I think you can even rent em' too! It's in North Charleston, about 2 miles from Downtown.

We've gone every year the past 3 years, and the last 2 years have stayed at the Andrew Pickney in a variety of rooms. The cheap rooms are small, but nicely furnished. The 2 story townhouse is the best, and well worth the little extra if you can get it. You get a private terrace large enough for (small) entertaining. The location is great - a few minutes walk to the battery, visitors center, and right in the middle of the historic district - near all the carriage companies, so if you REALLY have a problem with horses and their associated aromas, maybe not.
On a side note, if you make the common side trip and spend a day in Savannah, be sure to check out Cosentino's on MLK. Absolutely PHENOMENAL little italian place that the tourists haven't discovered. Our waitress was shocked to find we were "out of towners". Also if you have read "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," Mercer house (on Monterrey Square) has tours. At $12, not to be missed!
Have fun!

might also try:
The Lodge Alley Inn
Mills House
Even the Holiday Inn downtown is nice, if not historic.
The Market Pavilion Hotel is also new.

Is the Planter's Inn still ok?
We stayed at the one in Savannah (on our honeymoon) and the one in Charleston on a weekend trip.
Also, what about the Hayne House in Charleston? It's not that far from Jestine's and a block off the battery.

The owners are in the library with their klids all the time, so they must be OK!

Don't know what days you are in Chucktown but, there is a bar downtown called Cumberlands that has Heavy Metal Karaoke on Monday nights with a live band (a damn good band I will add) that has great entertainment value. And cheap booze.
I don't know what happened to your Jestine's remark, Georgia, but my daughter-in-law worked there while she was getting her M.A. from the Citadel. Mmmmumm. I love those Jestine's pickels....

Tess, I'm not following you about Jestine's? Please elaborate?
I love Jestine's too- great comfort food! Next time we're down there I'll have to pay extra special attention to the pickles.

We stayed in the old kitchen...seems like it was the Ginkgo Suite. They had great books available in the bookcases in the rooms so it doesn't surprise me they are good library folks.

In Spiney's post above he quoted you with a reference to the distance to Jestine's. Sorry for the confusion. They make a pickel appetizer that is just pretty much vinegar-soaked sliced cucumbers with heavy pepper and salt. Very, very crisp and tasty.

we'd played a bar downthere called the Cumberlands-Bout 4 miles from the beach-a#1 deli type food and Cheep beer, (I Guess) I was having Dr. Pepper of Course. Charleston is a beautiful city. I wish I'd had more time to bob around there
