yeah, good interview. i was pretty lukewarm on him in '04, but i've been impressed with him since. if hillary doesn't run (which i still think she won't)(although everybody else being so positive she will is eroding my confidence on that point) then i think he'd be one of the frontrunners in '08.

On the same topic, we just returned from 10 days in Toronto. My impressions apply only there, of course, but in general there seemed to be a much smaller difference socioeconomically between the rich & poor. I skated extensively around the city, and could not find any poor neighborhoods. I'm sure they exist, but normally they aren't that hard to find. I also didn't see any obvious ultra-rich neighborhoods. Again, they probably exist, but these kinds of differences are just far less visible in Toronto.

Health care is free, and just as good as that in the US according to my doctor. Toronto has THE best public transportation in the world. There really is no reason at all to own a car, which is very expensive.

There are neat, clean, nicely kept-up schools all over the city. They are so good even the suburbanites move into town to take advantage of them.

Income taxes are higher (38% I think is the top bracket) and you hit the top bracket sooner. They don't have a monster military machine to pay for. Sales taxes are 14%. Otoh, there's no FICA or Medicare withholding. Propety taxes are far lower than they are in Knoxville.

Mortgage interest isn't deductable there, so housing is far cheaper than any similar city in the US, or even Knoville.

The total effect seems to be a more even transfer of both educational opportunity and basic support services to the less affluent.
