ok, in re: recent discussion of a blab mp3 blog, unless and until such a thing come to pass, here's a thread for anyone who wants to to post some downloadable yousendit links. (if yr not familiar with yousendit, you can pick it up pretty quick by going to yousendit.com.)
to kick it all off, my new favorite dylan cover:
harry nilsson, subterranean homesick blues (http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=6D884FE90D7CB7C3).
(there's a set number of downloads for these links, so if they got exhausted, just email the person who posted them and maybe they'll be kind enough to post them again.)
gypsy
07-10-2006, 02:18 AM
(apart from the bang'n'thump of it, i love how nilsson says you don't need a featherman to know which way the wind blows...)
(i played music in college with a guy named dave featherman. wonder what became of him.)
gypsy

and some ostensibly (who can tell) christian finnish electro-folk bliss-out:
paavoharju, Valo Tihkuu Kaiken Läpi (http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=AEE4BE212905E383)
gypsy
07-10-2006, 02:37 AM
and, ok, just to really get things going, my official favorite single of the summer:
the pipettes, pull shapes (http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=520C653377F88092)
(i'm especially fond of how it seems like she's saying "there's a whole fluffy forest, just for you and me", which i know isn't the real lyric but i like it better that way)

Thanks gypsy. You are a scholar and a gentleman.
edit: perhaps I'm a moron, well after this I'm certain that I am. But, how does this yousendit thing work? I've tried to post something but it just sends me to a screen that will email the file to someone.
As long as we're doing Dylan covers, here's "Absolutely Sweet Marie" by Jason and the Scorchers.

the thing to do: email a file to yourself. it will send you a link. then you can post the link and other people can download from it. (i think up to 25 downloads per link.)

Thanks. Here is a song I came across recently. The group ended up being sorta a letdown, but good song: The Stills - Helicopters

See? Already a success. I'd been curious about the Stills.
OK, I still am, since I haven't listened yet. But I'll be less curious soon.

I can’t find anything else by Mr. Timmons other than this album, but this one spin alone has had me in its sway fer awhile now … the man not only has chops-a-plenty but also, unlike many shred-contemporaries of his, S-O-U-L.

Titled: ‘The Laughing Gnostic: David Bowie and the Occult’ – Peter-R Koenig (from an upcoming book)
From the intro:
“What is art, what is rock music? It's difficult to describe its codes, its gestures, its aesthetics and its perception but for the most part it can be experienced only, and only as an expression of our culture -- being in a movement of constant restlessness and mirroring all graspable parts of society. How can the feverish emptiness of endlessly repeated ecstasy be transformed into something that can be sensed, something heard and seen and be paid for? After all, this music is not qualified through the consciousness of its creator but through the states of mind created by its preceptors.
Frank Zappa expressed it in 1974 when Fido (a 'modified dog'?), was questioned about "conceptual Continuity" and answered thus: "The crux of the biscuit is the Apostrophe(')" ('Stinkfoot').”
From the odd section at the “end” ….
Why Bowie is better than God
Taken from mookid loves Bowie: why Bowie is better than God: a fan site
1. We know for certain that David exists.
2. David has cooler clothes; God's billowing robes are just so passe.
3. David is less prone to smiting sinners (a definite plus).
4. If you hear God's voice in your head, you're probably crazy.
5. If you hear Bowie's voice in your head, you may be crazy, but at least you have something to sing along to.
6. David looks better naked than God does. (Conclusion based on appearances in "The Man Who Fell To Earth" and the uncensored "China Girl" video)
7. God couldn't tease his hair that high, even during the 80's.
8. God can't play the guitar.
9. David has better shoes.
10. David is richer.
11. David is still attractive.
12. God probably looks like Mick Jagger or Keith Richards by now.
13. Going to a Bowie concert is a lot more fun than church.
14. God doesn't paint his toenails.
15. God's too uptight.
16. People don't corner you at malls to tell you that "Bowie loves you."
17. David looks better in a dress.

A great album, a collection of classical tracks with introductions by the man himself, Hitchcock. His introductions basically make this record worth listening to, very dry, macabre and very funny, in the way Hitchcock only can be.

The title track from LaRoca's 1967 masterpiece; an underrated and somewhat obscure otherwordly platter of modal and far-eastern influenced jazz. One of my all-time favorites. Basra was scheduled for release as an RVG remaster last summer, and I headed to the Disc Exchange that Tuesday only to find that the release had been indefinitely delayed. Apparently, LaRoca (Sims) felt that the name was innapropriate in light of the current situation in the Middle East. Sounds a little too sensitive to me, but whatever. I've never heard it, but those that I've talked to that have heard it speak of it very highly. It's only available here as a Japanese import or a British (copy protected) RVG.
