I have had the most incredible difficulty with my POS wireless router (http://www.jonathanhickman.com/2006/07/05/wireless-frustration/).

It continually goes in an out and about once every week or so it goes completely down for a day or so until I bend over backwards and find a way to get it to work.

But now it's been down for about 3 days and I can't for the life of me get it to work - I can't even get on the internet using it not wirelessly.

If that's a word.

Any suggestions? And for that matter, tell me what wireless router you've had luck with.

Microwave oven. Cordless phones. Do you really need either? Else: Go on the router and change the channel to some number of than 6. I'd use 11 or 9. Get a copy of Netstumbler or Macstumbler and see how many other APs are on channel 6 near you. Methinks that's the problem. THen again, you live in an apartment building so you probably have some asshole who is stealing your wireless and cloning your MAC address to do so.

I just cut my house over to 802.1x authentication. Not totally hackerproof but fuckall better than WEP.

Another trick is to see if it works fine when connected to the AP's Ethernet switch. Betcha it zips right along.

We had the same problem with that router, but Andy did something to the MAC address and now it runs with no problems. I will ask him this morning and will let you know. Wireless throughout the house kicks ass!!

I don't have a cordless phone and rarely use my microwave. It is an apartment, so obviously other people have those, but the walls are really thick, etc. Also, I tried changing the channel to 9 with no luck. In this room, I can rarely pick up more than one other wireless (using cain & abel). My biggest concern at this point is that I have to set up our office's wireless this week - as in tomorrow - and now I don't know which wireless router to buy.

The thing is, right now it's not letting me connect through the router even when using the ethernet port on the back. And someone told me I should upgrade the firmware, which seemed like a good suggestion to me, but I can't for the life of me get it to work (the directions say you have to upload the .rmt, but there isn't one in the zip - there's just a .bin).

I've setup 3 or 4 wireless networks using that exact same router (minus speedbooster) and have had nothing but success......with the exception of one incident. In that scenario, it worked for a few months and then started dropping connections. After spending and hour or so on the phone with Linksys and upgrading the firmware, they replaced the router at no charge. I would still recommend the router to anyone over the comparable D-Link or Netgear routers.

Ok. Good to know.

If I get time later, I will call Linksys. I've only had this one for about 8 months and it's not working at all now.
