..got me thinking about something. maybe rob or hitop would be willing somehow, but i was wondering if there was a way to possibly host mp3s for knoxblabbers somewhere, like a music blog?
the reason im wondering is because of shinola's post about finding new music. maybe we could have a page somewhere, like a music blog, where we could post mp3s for each other to listen to. obviously there would be a limit to how much each person could upload, but a place where if say gypsy or whoever wanted to let us hear a new band he thinks a lot of us would like, he could just put it there. add a little description and so forth, one track, and so on. have a way to archive everything, so that if say i wanted to see all the stuff kag had uploaded i could, or maybe created genre pages, something like that.
any thoughts? rob? anyone?

i had that idea a while ago, back when we were bubba blab. i ran it by bubba, but i don't think he was interested -- maybe concerned about bandwidth, or copyright issues, or both.
i'd be all in favor. mte could give us some pointers on mp3 bloggin.

good, cause i have no idea how to do it.
id even be willing to chip in a few bucks a month to add tracks myself. maybe that would pay for the bandwidth, make it sort of a premium for the knoxblab or soemthing to be able to add upload tracks. my rob could make like a set fee for everyone that wanted to contribute. i think it would be fun to see what folks were into musically. it would be a lot easier than hunting down peoples top 5 every week.
yeah, space is always the big issue. it would be supremely cheap collectively. a blog with 600 potential users might be a mess, though. maybe a sticky thread or new forum for mp3 posting? i'd definitely post stuff, if there was a place to post it.

could you do it in a way to where each person had their own "page", or archive of posts? like i said before, lets say i wanted to see everything that just jeffx had uploaded. could i do that? is that possible at all or no? not to say i wouldnt check out everyones posts, it just might be a little easier to read that way? sort of like a collective mp3 blog?

you couldn't archive it, exactly -- you'd only want to have so many live links at any time. otherwise it would really eat up server space.
A sticky YSI thread might be the best way to do it with this many people, unless the blog's heavily moderated so posters are on a rotating schedule of some sort. And that seems like a lot of work.

yeah, that's not a bad model. cheap 'n' easy. let ysi handle the bandwidth.
To commemorate the ocassion, here's "For Those About to Rock," by Godflesh.

Wouldn't that open blab up to some sort of lawsuit? Cool idea though.

as long as permission is granted by the copyright owner. I am assuming it would be from local bands wanting to share the love with the blab.

well, if you upload an mp3 as a video it uploads and works. But, like i said it spits out a bunch of errors. I'll have to look into it. If you have some stuff that you have copyrighted and want to share with the blab PM me and we can test it.

well, i was thinking about any band that was currently tickling a blabbers fancy, not just local bands.
how do most people that have mp3 blogs do it? do they contact each and every band they post a song by to ask for permission?

nah, there's about a zillion mp3 blogs that do the same thing. record companies are tolerating it, because the blogs only leave the songs up for a limited time; some are even using them as promotional tools. using yousendit makes it even more limited, because you can only download each file a set number of times.
and shoetick, do you mean yousendit only supports video? i don't think that's true. i've used it for audio files a bunch of times. (like that one mte just posted.)
so basically all we need to do is set up a sticky thread and start posting ysi links.

Sounds to me like what we need is a really kick ass FTP server with a couple terabyte drives, and a T1 connection. Super secure of course.

wombat: if you want to test uploading something for me click on submit a story and then acidfree media. then select a file (must be less than 8MB for now).
