View Full Version : Don't try to stop me

I am going to eat a cheesesteak sandwich with onions, pablanos (the Newark take on what the peppers should be), and white cheddar cheese. My sides are Utz chips and a Brazilian pickle salad. Washed down with a Stewart's Root Beer.

I am going to do it, even if it takes 10 minutes off my life. No use trying to stop me.

Where is the best Cheesesteak sandwich in K-town? Lenny's has a good one, is there a better one around here?

There has to be, i'd like to know too.

Lenny's is ok, but I can't stand how the bread is saturted in grease.

I'm envious Metulj. I doubt seriously that my lunch will be as good. (I'd take what your having, only it would be awesome to have a Sprecher's Root Beer instead! Yet another great Milwaukee treat.)

I think that Jersey Mike's has a pretty damn good cheesesteak.

Better than Lenny's IMO.

Other votes? I'm thinking Jersey Mike's.

Well, hands down the best Philly Cheesesteak used to be Vic and Bill's on White. Alas, it's no longer there and been replaced by something called the Campus Deli. Whatever.....sucks.

There's still a Vic and Bill's on Broadway, is it as good? I've never been there.

The same fry cook is there at Campus Deli/Vic and Bill's on White. I don't think it has changed much except in name. Don't know about the philly cheese though.

My old pal Chris is originally from Phillie. He told me a few years ago that Jersey Mike's is one of the most "authentic" sandwich shops, at least as far as Phillie-ness goes. I have to trust him on that.

They don't use cheez whiz?

We usually take friends over to Pat's or Geno's when we pick them up from the Philly airport...I find that nothing sets the mood like a good cheesesteak.

(Utz does make a good chip. I did take a tour of the Herr's factory in PA...a chip still warm out of the fryer is a beautiful thing.)

That's the standard. I just like white cheddar. I get my cheesesteaks from Bruno's Lunch, which is a roach coach parked outside our research center.

My brother would go for cheesesteaks at one or the other after he finished surgery. He went to med school in Philly and did his internship there. Nothing says "Yum" like listening to orthopedic surgeons passionately discussing the best way to amputate an old lady's leg or why they'd rather deal with blunt trauma to knees (like baseball bats) than small caliber GSWs to knees over a fatass cheesesteak.

But, carry on with the cheesesteak.

Oh my gosh, DnB! Heaven= a cheesecake sammich.

It could have raspberries between the cake and the graham cracker waffers or chocolate on the outside.

1. Cheez whiz on a cheesesteak is a travesty. Provalone belongs on a cheesesteak.

2. Pat's and Geno's are the most highly overrated cheesesteak makers in Philly. The only reason to go there are a) you're a tourist and you don't know any better or b) you're drunk, it's 4AM, you've got a cheesesteak craving and nobody else is open. If you're in Philly and you want a damn fine cheesesteak go to Jim's on South Street, Oregon Steaks on Oregon Avenue, Slack's on Snyder Avenue & Water Street, Sonny's on Market in Old City & Tony Lukes on Oregon (Great broccoli rabe[sp?] and awesome pork sandwich too) and I'm sure there are thousands more all over Philly, S.J. (Gaetano's, Rt.70 in Pennsauken & White Horse Pike in Lindenwold) & Del.

3. Utz, on the other hand, makes a damn fine chip.

My old pal Chris is originally from Phillie. He told me a few years ago that Jersey Mike's is one of the most "authentic" sandwich shops, at least as far as Phillie-ness goes. I have to trust him on that.

Jersey Mike's is OK but what really makes a cheesesteak is the roll and, unless you pipe a bunch a' Philly city water (wuder ;~) down here, or fly your rolls in fresh every morning, you're not gonna get the roll right.

Also, somebody mentioned Lenny's. I went there once, they didn't have any garlic powder and I had to do some serious convincing to get the kid at the grill to put the ketchup on the steak while it was cooking. If you're gonna have ketchup on your steak you want it to carmelize not sit on top like you were eating a hot dog.

The order goes, roughly: Onions, flip, flip, flip, steak, garlic powder, chop, chop, chop, (gut the roll), flip, flip, flip, provalone, ketchup, flip, flip, flip, chop, chop, chop, flip, flip, flip, toss on your roll, eat.

Oh and Metulje, Stewarts is definitely an awesome elixer but you should also give Pennsylvania Dutch Birch Beer a try.

I suck at punctuation today ;~(

You are nuts. Cheese Whiz is the gold standard and it has nothing to do with Pat's or Geno's. There's a place out on the Mainline in Philly that rocks the Cheese Whiz. Back that up with a water ice and you are floating on air ... or gas.

Branston pickles?

I got addicted to them while visiting England. Every pub had a different variation of a plowman's lunch and I liked each and every variation.

Using http://www.knoxmenus.com/ I found some other places that have cheesesteak sandwiches. Haven't tried any of them and would be interested to know if they are good.

Chili`s - Cumberland Ave

Connors

Downtown Grill & Brewery

Smoky Mountain Brewery

Yeah, and, of course, the Mainline yuppie kids decide the gold standard for cheesesteaks.

Yes, yes, and Muffie and Biff say [insert name of exclusive country club's 19th hole] makes great cheesesteaks, as well, I wonder, what wine pairings do they offer with that?

You know good and well that cheese whiz has been on cheesesteaks since someone first whizzed cheese. My Main Line comment was meant to illustrate that even Bryn Mawr folks know what's good. I have an e-mail to my bro for the name of the little joint across from Einstein Medical we used to go to. Cheese Whiz only.

I'm sure they are the McDonald's of cheesesteaks...but, I'm not a native and planes land whenever they want to so we go where it's open.

I'll definitely make note of the other places you mentioned as I'm always up for a roadtrip and a food comparison.

Now, if you're up this way and you want good crabs there is a little place in Leipsic, Delaware called Sambo's. (The owner's name is Sam- there is no racially charged innuendo.) They cover the tables with newspaper and dump the steamed crabs out- they also do a good honey fried chicken. There is no atmosphere but you can see the crabbers bringing in their load of crabs in on the tributary that backs up to the restaurant/pool hall. Must be 21 to eat there...

Sugar Hill Deli in May's Landing, NJ. Their calabrese sub is astonishing and will make you forgo any other meatball style sub unless it approaches that one. Take 559 from White Horse Pike in Hamilton Township. Prepare to stand in line. Their cheesesteak comes on an Atlantic City roll. Killer. With cheese whiz dammit.

Slack's & Tony Lukes are closer to the airport than Pat's/Geno's. Tony Lukes is open 'til midnightish, not sure about Slack's hours but I keep thinking they're a lunch and early dinner only spot.

Manhattan's has a very, very good Philly. Is it "authentic?" Nah...but very, VERY good. Think I will stop in and have one tonight.

And Rumor..I'm with you on the Provolone. However, I will not turn my nose up at the cheese sauce when at an "authentic" steak shop.

I like Lenny's Grilled Chicken Philly with the Spicy Pepper Relish - I know, I know, it ain't original and the bread prolly sucks for some of you bread officionados, but I really like it.

I haven't eaten at Nixon's since I moved here three years ago and found a bug in my salad - I know it happens and that is where bugs live, but I haven't gotten over it.

At Three in the morning I can't help it, I gotta have me some Jimmy John's.

Oh, I like the atmosphere...I just didn't want folks to go and then be upset that there aren't tablecloths, napkins are a roll of paper towels on the table, Nascar photos are covering the walls and you might get jabbed in the ribs if you too close to the guys shooting pool.

They do take reservations.
