We have a gas range. The ceramic top, under the burners has burned on grease. Really do not want to use over cleaner.

Any suggestions?

Try soaking and saturating the crud with white vinegar.

Another possibility is the stuff they sell for cleaning glass top ranges, also letting it soak into the burnt-on crud.

Powdered dishwasher detergent (as opposed to those liquid packets - how do they make those things?) is a pretty terrific cleaner. I sprinkle a little into particularly messy pots full of water and the food floats right away. It doesn't take much so be careful: I soaked something in a drinking glass and it clouded the inside of the glass.
