The Will Skelton Greenway is a nice option: Paved, about 8 miles round-trip (JtB or Gmiddleb could maybe be more accurate on that), just a couple of hills, great scenery.

Lots of good rides. I've done some of the rides and then used it to piece together some other wandering around the countryside. The farmland between Boyd's Bridge and Cosby and also up around House Mountain is nice.

Going out through Riverdale(sic) toward Kodak is some of the best cycling in this area.

Hayduke is sending us to Amazon???

How about from the source (http://www.miniadventureseries.com/orders.htm)? Or any of the many fine local retailers in our fine area that stock this fine book (bike shops, Three Rivers Market, Mast; others listed on the web site).

I tend to mostly wander about, and I usually ride from home rather than driving somewhere. I can give you a list of roads that I like, but that would be less helpful than the aforementioned book. My favorite areas have already been mentioned, but I am most familiar with South Knox and adjacent parts of Blount and Sevier counties -- if you want some info on particular roads let me know. My general observation is that most of the rural roads in these areas are suitable for riding except some of the main through roads, such as Chapman Hwy from Seymour north; 411 anywhere; and Ellejoy Road itself can be a little too busy and people in too much of a hurry -- some of the roads closer in to Knoxville (ie Martin Mill Pike north of Bonny Kate) can also be too busy. Some main highways are not too bad because there are shoulders (321 to Townsend, 11E, 11W) but they are also not very pleasant with all the fast traffic.

BTW, if you like flat roads, you live in the wrong part of the world. For that reason, I value low gears. (If you have not seen my blog rant on the subject, it is here (http://valvejob.wordpress.com/2010/12/29/gearing-part-ii-in-praise-of-low-gears/).)

I don't mind hills- in fact I enjoy them, I just don't care to bike up a mountain. And I am def. a low gear guy.

thanks for all the info everybody-

If that's not long enough for a ride, come back across the river and ride out Riverside Drive to the UT Farm. The reward is an outstanding view of the downtown skyline.

Fixed. Couldn't find that the first try.

Driving a car to a bike ride doesn't work for me either (but it's the only way to get Eunice to Cades Cove). I picked the two starting points closest me in the book and either ride there or pick up the route at a closer place. Mostly just build my own routes from the maps, route descriptions and cool things to see. That said, it's been a while since I've done any significant recreational riding. Need to get up in the morning and head east.

There are lots of great bicycle rides in the area. It's fun to just go exploring.

From downtown, there's a couple of fun easy starters I would recommend:

1) Cross the Gay Street bridge (you can ride on the sidewalk if you don't want to do the road, come out John Sevier along the river, then to Island Home, and pick up the bicycle trail at Island Home Park. From there, you can take the bicycle trail out another 3.5 miles past Ijams to the Wilderness area. It's a great ride. Plus there's all sort of great hiking around Ijams and the quarries.

2) Take the bicycle trail along Neyland Drive...Go down the creek to Tyson Park and out parallel to Kingston Pike. You can come up at the Church and cross over to Cherokee and ride down to the river and then turn around and come back. The only time spent on the road is on Cherokee which is usually very civilized.

You can combine the two for a very decent little urban ride.

There's more once you start exploring from there. And depending how much time you want to spend on the roads. And there are great options outside the city and county of course.

Just so we don't confuse anybody, that's not John Sevier. It's Sevier Avenue. Two different places.

I can get you from Calhoun's to Cedar Bluff with very little terror on mostly greenways.

(Thanks to "Skinny Dennis" at Cedar bluff cycles for the "Mystery Connector")
