100 x 100 (http://photomichaelwolf.com/100x100/):

photographs of residents in their flats in hong kong's oldest public housing estate: 100 rooms, each 100 square feet in size.

I like how the one woman has deconstructed MacDonald's bags serving as a frieze around the top edge of her walls.

Um, I don't think those people's lives just suddenly began to suck in 1997, when Hong Kong (I think) was ceded to China. Overpopulated, overdeveloped cities generally just suck, and this may come as a shock, but there are housing projects with poor people in the good ol' US of A.

I think most of the people in this forum (who aren't as young and ill-read as some others) agree that communism sucks or - since it is pretty much dead, just not quite buried yet - sucked in its heydey. Even China has entered the market place. If it weren't for those enterprising Chinese, we wouldn't have all those sweet car magnets that say, "Buy American" and "Support Our Troops."

Fascinating stuff. I'm there. Let's not talk about the architecture-as-psychology subtext. House as "Really Sweet Coffin."

But check out the dude's prices--you could hand build a "real" house for the price of one of his kits and his delivery fee of $3 per mile from his Calif workshop.

Cusato? Katrina? Not sure which name you find problematic.

Sure, I don't mind spelling it out. I think it's kinda strange to name a house meant to replace houses destroyed by a storm after the storm that destroyed a million houses.

Well, assuming that's what's going on here. I'm assuming. Being assumptuous. Is that a word? Or perhaps I'm just being an unctuous ass.

Well, OK, maybe a not a million houses. I'm being hyperbolic. Or hyperbolical. Or hyperumbilical? (My God, did you see the umbilical cord on that kid?) The root word is hyperbole.

I drove a Toyota Cusato back in the 80s. Good car. I have no idea why it got discontinued.

Hey, here's another spelling-it-out-fer-ya: I'm totally fucking off right now, being really silly, and need to get back to work.

really? i was thinking just the opposite. you could find someone to build a house in "10-16 weeks" and at that price?
the t-weed houses range 22k-42k compare that to this (http://cgi.ebay.com/2001-Clayton-Doublewide-Manufactured-Home_W0QQitemZ4441596011QQcategoryZ94825QQrdZ1QQcm dZViewItem)

I'm not going to defend Clayton even if there were a favorable comparison. But, factor in the S&H and carry the quality of life that comes from living in a glorified tool shed. A nice place to hang one's hat, by the way. Just don't have more than one hat.

This guy's missing a whole market niche by not offering something cheaper, say, the $600 range. He could call the line his "Unabomber" series and offer version called "Chez Unabomber," "Unabomber Royale," and the simplest, "The Ted."

Laugh all you want. I think I might get the 16x16 and put it on some land down at the Jersey Shore. Land is 250,000 bucks for 1/4 acre. $51 grand for that puppy delivered. That's only $300 grand for a vaction house, built a hell of a lot better than most.

He won't deliver the big ones since they don't come apart and won't fit on roads. You can buy the plans for any of them for $680 and have it built on site. Probably be cheaper that way anyway.

I'm just envious. If you guys order one of them Tumbleweed houses, can I have the box it came in? I was thinking it was time I settled down.

I emailed him a while back and he has a "solution" in the works to that problem. Nice guy. He was on WNYC's Leonard Lopate show recently.

I hear there are a whole bajillion of them sitting in south Alabama without a soul ever setting a toe into them, a al FEMA's direction. Follow that trail, if you please. Fine housing if you are in the back bedroom of mammaw's still, a year after Katrina.

I guess I should chime in here since I actually live in about 240 sq ft on my boat. I've tried it the large house way too, collecting more stuff and spreading out. Regardless of where I've lived, it seems like I need a bed, a comfortable chair, a kitchen, a bathroom and a desk. When I've had larger places the number of steps between the places was bigger and there were more gadgets in the kitchen, but the basic enjoyment of the space wasn't any different.

For entertaining, multiple guests tend to be of the fair weather variety, so they want to be outside. If two people are going to share the space, it's pretty important that you have the ability to get out of sight of each other once in a while, but I don't see adding on a bunch of rooms just so you can live with someone you don't get along with.

Anyway, I don't really use all 240 sq ft, so I'm thinking of selling it and getting something smaller. As God is my witness, I'll never mow grass again.

What's up with the tethers? For 1,200,000 Euros I want the thing to free float, ricochet off the walls and knock over a few lamps.
