For real. That was a beautiful performance. If she was really singing, my hat is off for the level of difficulty. Our son (5 yrs.), who begged to stay up a little later to watch GaGa and Beyonce, asked why she was dipped in water. I told him that made it more "artistic." Though earlier he stated when Beyonce was gyrating across the stage, "well, she's giving me something I want to watch." Sigh. I'm not looking forward to the teenage years.

Well, she's trying. To be fair, I'd much rather listen to her vocals (surprisingly) unprocessed at the Grammys than be subjected to the fingernails-on-a-chalkboard horror that is live Autotune.

I thought so too last night, but as far as I can tell it wasn't. I don't think Steve is that large.
Also, I was surprised Jeff didn't play an 'oxblood' since he went all "VOS" with the guitar choice. I mean, Gibson does make one, but that might have gone against his Fender contract.

I'm a little surprised at how personally you seem to be taking this and that you seem to have no sense of humor about it at all. Nothing I've said has anything to do with whether I like something or not. At not one point in my discussions have I mentioned whether I personally "like" VW or Taylor Swift...nor have I in fact suggested anything of the kind. And I have not intentionally attacked anyone's "likes"...rather I've had some fun analyzing or challenging the "dislikes."
And to quote you from the Vampire Weekend thread:
"it's a pose like any other but it's sort of a funny pose."
So, while you may not have exactly called anyone a poser, I was inspired to use the term by you. And, yes, I would again restate my comment that suggesting that Taylor Swift's off-key singing at the Grammys as a form of punk rock is, in fact, the musing a poseur. Not that I didn't think you were joking a bit....
I think it's fine if you like Taylor Swift.

(i never did understand wtf you were saying here, btw.)
and...
It's not about Taylor Swift. It's about you.
so, you want to talk about me. which is ok by me, but i'm not the one who brought me up as a subject of conversation.
and anyway i don't take it "personally" because i've seen you do this same kind of rhetorical shilly-shallying before with other people, where you sort of imply or accuse them of "liking" or "not liking" things because of some ulterior motives having to do with image or hipness or i don't know what-all. and of course this is usually when somebody happens to not like or be wowed by something that you like or are wowed by. like, you want me to credit that vampire weekend fans "just like their music," which i completely agree with. i haven't accused anybody of being a pitchfork-wave-rider for liking that band, because i just don't think that's how or why people like things. but then people who don't like them, ah, there must be some motive, some agenda, it can't be that i just have a fingernails-on-chalkboard reaction every time i hear that manic chirping.
and i was half-kidding about taylor, but i really do think her persistent pitchiness is sort of endearing, because surely by now she knows it's a weakness (since everybody says so every time she does one of these live tv spots), but she goes out and does it anyway -- without lip synching or live-pitch-correcting or all the other tricks a lot of people use in those settings. if i didn't like her songs and her music i wouldn't care one way or the other, but since i do like those things her tuning trouble just becomes sort of a likable quirk. (albeit one that would probably keep me from paying a lot of money to go see her -- it's not that endearing.)

Jesse - I did not intend to cause real offense here, so if I've done that, I sincerely apologize. I sometimes get in the mood where I enjoy the banter back and forth about some of these topics. I should realize by now that the use of humor - especially when needling another person - on these forums is tricky at best. But I was really just messin' with you. We're just talking about Vampire Weekend and Taylor Swift after all...no one's getting hurt.
That being said, I find your characterization of my rhetorical shilly-shallying more than a little bit unfair. It's true that I enjoy digging into peoples likes and dislikes and tastes and interests and exploring the factors that influence them. As someone who generally ignores what I don't like and focuses on what I do, I'm especially intrigued by "haters" who feel a special compulsion to rail against certain things that others like...you know, in the world of music it's the "Your Favorite Band Sucks!" mantra. I don't know why but I find it both amusing as well as weirdly fascinating...and I love to poke at it with a sharp stick to provoke the usually all too predictable responses. But sometimes there's an enjoyable surprise.
However, this rarely if ever has anything to do with my personal likes or dislikes. I'm really not that thin-skinned in that regard. Believe me, I'm used to LOTS of people not liking things that I like. Including my wife on many occasions. And it's not that I see an ulterior motive behind every liek or dislike...only sometimes.
At any rate, I enjoy thinking and talking about these things...which I'm sure seems very trivial and odd to most people.
I suppose that I would tend to agree with your characterization of Taylor's struggle with pitch as "endearing." I didn't actually witness it myself. But I felt pretty confident that it had little about it that could be characterized as "punk" - at least, at least from my perspective.
But...enough...the snow and ice are mostly gone, the week's getting busy, my cold's getting better, and i'm no longer jetlagged so I'll be a little more scarce here on the Blab...until the next time.
I'll be happy to explain to you why you're a card-carrying member of the hipoisie over a beer sometime! :o)

When I find myself in times of trouble, mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.
I did not intend to cause real offense here, so if I've done that, I sincerely apologize.
no problem. i know the drill. you know i love talking about music, arguing or otherwise. i just don't like when people assign motives to other peoples' tastes -- it's a sort of cheap move, "X only likes Y because of Z," "those people like that thing for the wrong reasons," or whatever. it amounts to mind-reading, and it's a pretty dubious practice. i'm interested in why people like or don't like things because i think tastes are interesting, but i tend to believe what they say (even if what they say is, "i dunno, it sounds good"). i have enough trouble figuring out why i like or don't like things without second-guessing anyone else.

you buy, i'm in.
(edit: and about taylor, i said "unintentionally punk" -- and in the context of a big glossy show of people made up and amped up to look and sound better than they really do, those jarring notes and blown harmonies sort of were.)

I'm going to stop...I swear I am....but...
I want to be clear...I do NOT assign motives to other people' tastes...except occasionally in certain instances...for instance, as I wrote:
"As someone who generally ignores what I don't like and focuses on what I do, I'm especially intrigued by "haters" who feel a special compulsion to rail against certain things that others like...you know, in the world of music it's the "Your Favorite Band Sucks!" mantra. I generally don't spend a lot of time thinking about why people don't like things. I'm perfectly satisfied with answers like "I just don't" if I feel need an answer at all...but that's not what we've been talking about here.
i'll play along. let's go to the tape...
What I meant by a "guardian of the hipoisie" - like a "guardian of the bourgeoisie" - was someone who protects and defends the dogmas, rules, and tenets of their particular social or belief system. They are ususally afraid of it being corrupted or subverted or of losing some status or control.
... This is a pretty common affliction...kind of the private club mentality...While I enjoy a lot of music that isn't popular, I don't believe that I enjoy BECAUSE it isn't popular. I'm not especially into that way of thinking.
If you don't believe that there are people who do this, then you need to get out a bit more.
ok. so you are postulating that there are some people who like or don't like bands or artists because they are afraid of "their particular social or belief system" being "corrupted or subverted or of losing some status or control."
i think this is an odd postulation, since i know a lot of devoted fans of different kinds of music but none i can think of off the top of my head who'd fit that description. and it all sounds a bit da vinci code to me. but ok. if you say so.
but then a few posts later you say, to me:
Jesse, I think you're misunderstanding my admittedly loosely or undefined terminology. YOU are a member of the "hipoisie" as I define it. Get it?
i don't actually "get it," but you are apparently saying i'm some part of some group of people who align their tastes in accord with some set of principles designed to protect the sanctity of some systems of something or other in order to keep vampire weekend from corrupting or subverting our control ...
and i'm thinking basically ... OH NO HE'S ONTO US! quick, deploy the Taylor Swift!

Perhaps a more direct way to state this is: Birds of a feather flock together. And music can be one of the things they flock around...and it can become a social glue and "identifier" for those groups. And, yes, it can be part of a system of inclusion and exclusion from the group. Nothing particularly earth shattering or relevatory about that. Surprised you're unaware of this.
And, yes, you are one of those birds...(as I recall you were inclined to be flattered by the designation)...who sings somewhat out of tune.

i still honestly have no idea what you're talking about. what groups? what do you mean? this is all vague but sort of accusatory, which makes it hard to respond to. i mean, dude, i could spin all kinds of things about you and your tastes and the intersections or contradictions between them and your more mercenary interests, but really i have no idea. and i don't have any interest in speculating about your reasons for "liking" something or not liking it, or what you promote or don't, because i'm happy enough for all the good stuff you do to really not care about the things that i don't care about. if you like something, great. if you don't like it, fascinating. everybody's got to do what they've got to do, not everyone's interests are going to align all the time. that's the way it goes. it's the only way things can actually work.
i don't really have anything else to say about that, i don't think. if my personal tastes are really of any concern to you, you can buy me that beer and we can talk about them.

speaking of taylor swift, here's a good little analysis (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/02/arts/music/02taylor.html?ref=music):
Success has altered how she’s perceived, but most of all, success breeds perspective, especially in someone as savvy and bright as Ms. Swift.
Ideally, what will emerge will be a new Ms. Swift, cut from whole cloth, with some gumption, some sass, some wisdom that the world has crueler foes than teenage boys.

Well, if you have no idea what I'm talking about then it's no wonder that you don't understand my points. There's nothing radical or particularly illuminating about it. There's nothing accusatory either. It's just an all too obvious observation of human nature. In the music world, these groups could be jazz purists, classical snobs, opera afficianados, hipsters, jam band fans, bluegrass heads, etc etc.
In this instance, your personal tastes are only of an interest to me in that you chose to put them out there on a public forum, and therefore were presumably interested in engaging in some sort of dialogue or at the very least inviting some comments in return. I thought it might be fun to participate in the discussion and perhaps challenge some observations or assumptions. Beyond that, your personal tastes don't really interest me that much.
As for speculating about my own tastes, I really didn't talk about my personal likes and dislikes (except in the case of the xx), but rather something else. As for my mercenary interests, the most simplied explanation is that I am concert promoter and I try to focus on promoting concerts that hopefully other people want to buy tickets to see. As a fan, I spend my free time listening to music and attending concerts of the music that I personally like (or at least want to check out). Sometimes these things intersect in a nice way. Which is great. Sometimes I get daring and promote music that I really love even though it is highly questionable if not totally obvious that not that many other people care. But I do that out of a personal interest and passion. I try to be careful. It can hurt.
And that's that.

of course, but those are clichés that rarely really describe any one person. or at least, most of the real music fans i know -- fanatic or casual -- have tastes that range across a fair number of different things. especially these days, with so much stuff available so easily, you never know who's going to like or listen to what. the difference in our positions here is that you seem to think you can categorize me somehow with one of these cliché labels -- apparently mostly on the basis of me not liking vampire weekend, since i don't think you really know much about what i like or don't -- and that's just sort of obnoxious. is all i'm really saying.

that's fine, i like talking about music. but you're not really talking about music, you're talking about "some people" and their hidden motives or something, and like i said i find those kinds of things kind of dubious. so i'm challenging your assumptions back. i think it's very suspect to try to assign agendas to people's tastes. in my experience it doesn't really work that way, for me or anyone else. and with you being somebody who's professionally involved in trying to broaden people's spheres of musical experience (and often successfully, too), i think it's surprisingly reductive of you to go around labeling people like that.
to give just one example (warning: taylor swift content ahead), my own sister is somebody who you could call sort of a purist. when she started playing fiddle about 10 years ago she got very heavily into old-time music and for a while that's all she listened to. then some years later she sort of starting getting back into stuff she had liked before -- bruce springsteen, various '80s things -- and she even started listening to some newer stuff. (she got into green day via her husband and my brother.) but there's still a lot of stuff she didn't like or listen to, and one thing she was absolutely, 100 percent sure of was that she didn't want anything to do with "country music." she loved string bands, but had no interest in anything from bill monroe onward. not classic country, not countrypolitan, not outlaw country or alt-country and definitely not nashville commercial country.
so for christmas i sent her a taylor swift cd.
three weeks later i get a mock-anguished email from her confessing that she liked it and had already gone and watched all of the taylor swift videos on youtube and has played it enough that my 10-year-old nephew (who likes bruce and green day but does not want anything to do with girly-pop) is now mad at me for introducing this plague into their home.
which proves nothing at all except that even what people think they know about their own tastes is often suspect and subject to change.

Yeah, I thought they said "Dre" and then wondered, 'that ain't Dre so who the fock is THAT guy?' and then thought the audio went out altogether.
cbs went censor-crazy on that tune. the next day i found a youtube clip of it from the italian tv feed that still bleeped out the bad words, but there were only like a half-dozen of them and you could hear everything else. (that clip has since been deleted of course for copyright reasons.) i think after the janet jackson and u2 incidents, networks are just totally gunshy now. but it sort of makes you wonder why they bothered to do the performance at all, since it pretty much ruined the song.
